I have to admit that I was hesitant to play a game that had Steven Spielberg’s name on the cover. It’s not that I don’t like Spielberg, but sometimes I think the gaming industry has a habit of putting big names on a steaming pile of crap to try and get people to buy it and unfortunately it works. However, I’m happy to say that I’m pleasantly surprised by Boomblox.
This is a very interesting game. Not only does it have a solid single player mode (something which many Wii games are lacking), but it also has an awesome party mode. There are several different types of games all wrapped up in Boomblox.
In the party mode you start out in the wild west zone where you try and score the most points by shooting different point value blox that fly across the screen. Think of skeet shooting a shiny yellow blox with a shotgun that has no recoil and you’ll get the picture. This is the easiest mode and it is pretty difficult to not pass a level as it is just point and shoot.
The next style in the wild west mode is the classic carnival game where the goal is to knock the milk bottles down with a baseball, but this game isn’t rigged like the carnival ones. In this game type you knock the blox off of platforms and you need to achieve a certain score to reach the next level. There are also multiplier zones that will give you 2X or 4X the advertised blox point value if you are able to knock the blox off the platform and into these floating semi-transparent boxes. The only difficult part about this game type is that as you progress some penalty blox are added into the mix and if you hit these the points on these blox are subtracted from your score. If you are wondering if these can be multiplied then the answer is yes so be sure not to knock these into the 4X multiplier boxes.
I’ve only talked about game types so far but lets take a moment to talk about the graphics. I thought the graphics are better than most Wii games and everything looks shiny and polished. The sound in the game is decent as well, but the little blox creatures make some strange noises that can become repetitive when you can’t beat a level and start to get frustrated. I hate to say it, but I’ve purposely beaned a few of the animals out of frustration.
Along with the skeet shooting and milk bottle knocking there is also a Jenga-esque mode that is probably the hardest. The first few zones are pretty easy with this game type, but the last one took my wife and I about an hour to complete.
We haven’t finished the game yet, but all in all I really like this game. It reminds me more of the games of my childhood that were actually fun rather than some of the present games that spend too much time on the visuals but have empty gameplay. The different game types prevent you from getting bored easily and the game is just hard enough that you want to keep playing and don’t get too frustrated. I think more game developers need to pay attention to games like this and follow suit.
