Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

I have to admit I was a little worried about how Indiana Jones 4 was going to turn out, we all saw what happened with Star Wars after all. I’m happy to say that Indiana Jones lives up to it’s predecessors…Although it took two viewings for me to fully appreciate it. The first time I saw it I was a little dissapointed, I thought it was good, but I didn’t think it was near as good as the original three movies. I thought it was too ridiculous and over the top, but after the second time I thought it was no more ridiculous or over the top as the other Indys. I was probably just expecting the worst because of those Star Wars prequels.

The movie has all the action and humor of the previouse films. It may not have as much of the nonstop action of Temple of Doom or be quite as funny as Last Crusade, but I feel it had a good blend of both similer to Raiders of the Lost Ark, which is probably a good thing.

Harrison Ford seemed to be able to get right back into character and hasn’t slowed down a bit when it comes to the action sequences. There are a few jokes on his age, but what did you expect.

Cate Blanchet plays a communist agent and probably the coolest main villain in an Indiana Jones film (Mola Ram comes in second). She also has psychic powers which makes her a villain you would expect to see in Metal Gear Solid.

Shia LaBeouf plays Mutt Willaims, a 50s greaser and the newest in the line of Indiana Jones sidekicks.

Sallah is tragically absent….

I mentioned that I thought it was ridiculous and over the top the first time I saw it, and although i’ve changed my mind since then, there are still two scenes that can easily be called “jump the shark” moments. Ones of these scenes comes pretty early in the movie, I won’t give anything away, but lets just say Indy survives something you wouldn’t see Spiderman survive, and it really has nothing to do with the story either, which really makes you wonder why they added it in the movie in the first place. The second scene that annoyed me involves Shia LaBeouf swinging on vines with some monkeys ala Tarzan, but this scene was obviously just used as an excuse for someone to “swing in” like in all action movies, so it is forgivable.

There are a few plot twists that may upset a few Indy fanatics, but those of us who enjoy good cinema won’t mind. There are a few references of the old movies that are sure to have fans of the series happy…Although none of them reference Short Round unfortunately…

So I found it to be an extremely enjoyable movie and a more than worthy follow up to the original three. It had the heart and soul of the originals as well as all the content. Vastly superior to the Star Wars prequels in every way, and much, MUCH better than National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

I like Ike!

I love the movie. The only qualm I had about it is the part with the fridge. I don’t want to spoil anything, but you know what I mean.
