Its that time of the year again, the time when all the blockbusters come out and make boatloads of money, the first of these blockbusters this year hopes to be Ironman! But is it worth the wait?
Ironman is the first movie released by Marvel Studios, and its a pretty good start. It may not have as much action as a lot of other super hero movies , but it does have better character development. In fact, that’s probably the movie’s biggest strength. We see Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr. for those of you who live in a cave) go from an arrogant, womanizing, gambling ”I’m better than you” kind of guy to a selfless protector of innocents. I do wish he was Ironman a little more in the movie, but we can see more Ironman in the sequel when they don’t have to explain the back story.
I also find Obadiah Stane (played by Jeff Bridges) to be a pretty good villain…although he still has the worst name in super villain history. At first he seems like a nice, friendly guy who’s just looking out for the best of his company, but ends up being a power hungry madman. Best of all is his intense beard! He kind of looks a bit like Al Borlin from Home Improvement to me…
I do hope the sequels will focus a little more on Tony Stark’s inner struggles (such as alcoholism) since I think it makes him an interesting super hero.
The action sequences are also cool. We get to see a pre-Ironman Ironman (who looks like the Tin Man from Oz in battle mode) take out some bad guys pretty early on. Then we get to see the true Ironman take on the Iron Monger at the end. It’s a lot of fun although a few more scenes of Ironman would have been nice, but there is plenty of time for that in Ironman 2.
I found Ironman to be a pretty entertaining super hero movie. Lets hope that Marvel Studios can keep it up.
Heres to more intense beards!
