I love old games. Old games were fun. There were so many timeless classics back then, it seems like today people just give a game good graphics and rush it out the door. But it seems like making retro style games is becoming more common, which is a very good thing. Here are few recently announced “old school games.”
Diablo 3 has recently been announced. I was worried that if they should make a third game in the series, that it would end up being like “World of Warcraft: Diablo edition” or something. But they instead gave it the same playing style that fans of the series love so much and gave it new classes and better graphics. It looks like a lot of fun, but being made by Blizzard, it probobly won’t be released for a while.
Wario Land: Shake it! is a classic, side-scrolling adventure on the Nintendo Wii. It will have an old look to it (like the old Wario Lands) and will be played with the Wii remote held sideways (old school style). I’m guessing it will also include some new power-ups in the grand old Wario Land tradition of turning a negative into a positive (like catching on fire).
Megaman 9…This is too good to be true. It has been over 11 years since the last proper Mega Man game. Megaman 9 will be available for download from Wiiware and I’m guessing also from Xbox live arcade and Playstation network, but of course the Wii is where this game makes the most sense. This game is so old-school that they are even making it an 8-bit title, so it’s kind of like a brand new NES game! I also would have liked to have seen the graphic style of Mega Man 8, but given that 6 of the 8 classic Megamans were on the original NES, I guess it makes sense.
I hope making these old school style games catches on. They just don’t make them like they used to…

I agree with you that this is a good move for the gaming community. I don’t know if it is just because I grew up with these games and that is the allure of them or if it is that they were simply great games. Many games while visually stunning aren’t really that fun to play. I would have to say that Diablo II is probably my favorite PC game of all time. I think it has to do with the entire feel of the game. The music, the graphics, the story, and the characters all come together to create something very meaningful and memorable. It has a depth and breadth to it that is not often found in games lately.
