Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure

Zack and Wiki is a great game. Just ask the Twelve people who played it. It’s a game that both uses the Wii remote in the best ways possible and shows that third-party companies can indeed make a great Wii game.

Zack & Wiki is a point and click adventure game that will have you using your Wiimote in just about anyway you can think of in order to solve puzzles. You will be ringing bells, fishing, taking control of ancient robots,  sawing down trees, using umbrellas to slow your falls, pretty much anything. It probably uses the Wii remote better than any other game on the system.

The game is also very challenging. It had me stumped on several occasions and even had me a little flustered at times, but this just makes the game feel more rewarding when you finish a level. It gives you a sense of accomplishment that so many games these days just don’t have.

The boss fights are another highlight of the game. Each boss fight is completely unique and you will really have to use your head to beat them. The final boss in particular is one of the most challenging boss fights in recent memory, it took me around 30 tries to defeat him.

Of course what would a great game be without great characters (well I guess it would be Halo).

Zack is a pirate kid who loves chocolate and hopes to be a great pirate someday.

Wiki is a golden monkey…thing that can fly and does all of the talking for Zack. Most notable  is his power to transform into a magic bell (by shaking the remote) to transform various objects and enemies into puzzle-solving items. He also resembles Data from Mega Man Legends.

Johny Style is a talking rabbit who shows up on occasion to give you a hint or two. He also hangs out at the hub area to tell you your overall score for the game. He mysteriously disappears whenever trouble is nearby.

Rose is your rival pirate who is always followed by several mindless goons. She is always looking for treasure but never really seems to know what she’s doing.

Barbaros is an ancient pirate who is now nothing but a golden skull (complete with a mustache) who promises to take Zack and Wiki to treasure island and give them his old ship if they can find the rest his treasure.

Its good to know that there is still a game that has cute, cartoonish characters (like the good old days) in a day and age when every games’ idea of a hero is “a genetically enhance super soldier seeking revenge on one thing or another”.

The sad thing though, is that so few people have experienced this gem of a game. It will go down as a cult classic for sure, but a game this fun deserves much, much better.

All in all Zack & Wiki is a very fun, very original and very rewarding game that I would recommend to anyone. It does the Wiimote justice and is one of the best games on the Wii. Do yourself a favor and buy this game.

Johny Style is the coolest name ever.
