Batman Begins

The Batman franchise was practically dead and buried after the cinematic abomination known as Batman & Robin in 1997. Then along came Batman Begins to not only redeem the franchise, but make it far better than it ever had been before. Batman Begins is more than just another super hero movie, Batman Begins is a super hero epic!

Unlike the 1989 Tim Burton Batman film, Batman Begins does not simply have the caped crusader smashing bad guys from the get-go. Batman Begins is the much appreciated back story of Batman. We see more of a reason why Bruce Wayne becomes Batman in the first place, and it is told perfectly. Joe Chill murders Bruce Wayne’s parents (as opposed to the 1989 movie which gave the Joker some unnecessary extra pathos by having him commit the crime), we actually witness Bruce Wayne training under Ra’s al Ghul and the league of shadows, and we get to see just how Batman gets all of those wonderful toys!

Batman Begins is only made better by its cast of awesome talent.

  • Christian Bale portrays a better Batman (and Bruce Wayne) than anyone ever knew possible. You could really put Christian Bale in any movie and he would make it better.
  • Michael Cain plays Alfred the butler…Need I say more?
  • Everyone’s favorite voice, Morgan Freeman, plays Lucius Fox, the man behind Batman’s gadgets.
  • Liam Neeson as Henri Ducard, Bruce Wayne’s mentor in combat.
  • Cillian Murphy as Dr. Jonathan Crane a.k.a the Scarecrow, the crazed psychiatrist who uses fear against others.
  • Gary Oldman as Sgt. James Gordan, Gotham city’s lone good cop.
  • Katie Holmes is also in it………..

A very interesting aspect of Batman Begins is how it makes a super hero film believable. Yes, it is still about a multi-billionaire who dresses like a bat to fight criminals, but it never really feels “over the top”. The Bat-mobile now resembles a “black tank”. The gadgets are all given a purpose (no shark repellent here). The villains are all believable (there’s no room for you,  Mr. Freeze). Everything is done in a way that it doesn’t seem at all like your average super hero movie.

Like everything else about the movie (except Katie Holmes), the action does not disappoint. Whether its brawling with mobsters and the league of shadows or destroying half of Gotham city in the Tumbler (aka Bat-mobile), everything just seems to ooze awesome.

Of course the best part of the movie is that everything comes together. Nothing is wasted. Great writing, awesome action, fantastic acting (except Katie Holmes), everything comes together in a way that can only be described as epic. This movie is incredible, plain and simple. If you love great movies, you will love Batman Begins. This is one of the greatest super hero films ever made.

You want my opinion? You need to lighten up!
