Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Hellboy II is a very fun movie. It has likable characters, good action, good humor and a very strong imagination (but that is to be expected from the director of Pan’s Labyrinth). It may just seem like another super hero movie in a year where men in iron suits, green giants and flying Will Smiths seem to flood the big screen, but Hellboy II is actually my favorite of the bunch so far.

Hellboy himself is a very fun character. You would expect a big, red demon to be an anti-hero at best, only being a “good guy” by fighting people even worse then he is, but Hellboy is a true, blue (not literally) hero who likes cats and loves to watch T.V.

Hellboy is accompanied by Abe Sapien (the awesome blue fish man) and Liz Sherman (the pyrokinetic) from the first movie as well as Johann Krauss, an ectoplasmic being who wheres a special suit to maintain a physical form. Each character is interesting and unique in their own way which keeps them from being boring and repetitive.

The fight scenes are a lot of fun. We get to see Hellboy and company battle a forest god, brawl with a cave troll and duel with the evil elf prince Nuada. Every action sequence is very entertaining and will never leave you bored.

The movie’s strongest point, however, is its imagination. The weird and strange becomes the norm in this movie. There are ogres with launchable iron fists, creatures with castle shaped heads and, of course, the golden army. Everything seems to have a little bit of the Star Wars cantina to it.

So I found Hellboy II: the Golden Army to be a very entertaining movie. It may not be the best movie out there, but I recommend it to anyone who likes good super hero movies and imaginative cinema.

You woke up the baby!
