Spiderman

Ah Spiderman 1. A very enjoyable and fun movie. It makes me sad to know how big of a slap in the face Spiderman 3 was after two great movies. But Spiderman 3 can not dampen the greatness of the first two films.

Spiderman was really the movie that started the current success of super hero movies, and with good reason, it was a good movie. Yes, Spiderman can be a bit cheesy at times (Green Goblin’s suit is down right ridiculous), but its cheesy in a way that just makes it even more enjoyable. After all it was things like the upside down kiss that made this movie famous.

Peter Parker of course becomes Spiderman after being bitten  by a radioactive “super spider”, at first using his new found powers for such things as wrestling to win money for a car to impress Mary Jane (Peter Parker’s crush for the five of you who are unfamiliar with Spiderman), until his uncle is killed by a random act of violence that he himself could have prevented (which is far more impactful than having Sandman kill him just to give the super villain more pathos, so lets ignore that that happens).

The villain is, of course, the Green Goblin. William Dafoe’s portrayal can be both intimidating and over the top. He can seem like a friendly figure at one moment then become a complete madman the next, which really makes him a great villain. His “over the top” moments just make it all the more fun, when he says such things as “we’ll meet again Spiderman!” you can almost imagine him wearing a top hat and monocle while supporting a handlebar mustache.

Special mention has to go to J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. He almost seems like the character walked right out of the comics. I honestly don’t think they could have chosen a better Jameson.

The action is very exciting. We see enough web-slinging and crime fighting to never get bored, but not so much that there’s no time to develop the story and characters. It really has a good balance that most comic book movies don’t achieve.

If you ask me, Spiderman is one of the best super hero movies. It may be far more of a popcorn movie than, say, Batman Begins, and Spiderman 2 managed to trump it in just about every way, but Spiderman can still hold its own as a great super hero film. Its just a shame that Spiderman 3 couldn’t keep the momentum going.

The Yams is pleased.
