Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People – Episode 1: Homestar Ruiner ( A review for attractive people )

Homestar runner, Strong Bad and the rest of the characters of Homestarrunner.com have been a cult icon since the website launched in 2000, and through all the obscure video game references fans wondered if/when the Homestar runner crew would get a “proper” video game of their own. Our pleas have finally been answered by Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People ( or SBCG4AP for short), a five part, point-and-click adventure starring everyone’s favorite email answering, wrestling mask faced cool guy, Strong Bad! But does it live up to the Strong Bad name? Or are the Homestar runner characters just a stunt to gain a larger audience?

SBCG4AP episode 1: Homestar Ruiner tells a story that seems like it came right out of one of the cartoons of which it’s based. Strong Bad checks his email where someone simply asks him to “beat the snot out of Homestar”, to which Strong Bad happily agrees. But when Strong Bad finds that Homestar will be competing in the Free Country USA Tri-anual Race to the End of the Race, he decides to partake in the race himself and beat Homestar at his own game.

Along the way you will collect cards to make your own Teen Girl Squad comic and pages for the Snake Boxer 5 Manuel (Snake Boxer 5 being a retro style game-within-the-game that is fun in its simplicity and satire on video games.). You’ll visit familiar locales like Bub’s Concession Stand and The Stick, all while bringing down the spirits of  the likes of Coach Z and the King of Town. It really is a Strong Bad video game!

There are a few technical issues with the game, the animations can get a little choppy and slow down at times. It is also pretty short and only took me about three play sessions to get through the game, but it is only the first part of a five part game so it isn’t that big of a deal.

The great thing about SBCG4AP is that it really feels like playing through a Homestar runner cartoon (especially a Strong Bad email), it has all the familiar satire that the cartoons made famous, and blends it with new jokes such the song “Can’t Handle my Style” that are sure to become popular with fans. But it may feel a little alien to those who are unfamiliar with the website. I would recommend that anyone who doesn’t know about Homestar Runner may want to watch several of the cartoons first or the game may feel like a chain of inside jokes.

SBCG4AP episode 1 may not be the best point and click adventure on the Wii (Zack & Wiki holds that honor) but it is still a fun and humorous game that holds true to its material and I have high hopes for episode 2 (titled Strong Badia the Free). SBCG4AP does indeed live up to the Strong Bad name!

This was a tougher game to score. It obviously has its flaws, but I found that it was fun enough and did the whole “Strong Bad video game” concept justice. So I feel an 8 out of 10 was a good score, even if it isn’t as good as, say, Team Fortress 2 (which I also gave an 8). But for the kind of game it is, I think 8 fits the game. I just love that Strong Bad fellow.
