Ten Great Video Game Music Themes

Keep in mind that this isn’t a “top ten list.” I am too big of a fan of video game music (and video games in general) to be able to make a “top ten” list for video game music. This is simply a list of ten pieces of video game music that I feel are truly great. I hope to do this every now and again to show my admiration for video game music (and in tern, video games). The only real “rules” I have for this (hopefully these) list(s) is that, in order to prevent one single game from dominating the list, I will only choose one theme per game…per list (for example, I may include one theme from the original Legend of Zelda on this list, but if I wanted to, I would have to wait until the next list to include another). I also will only limit a small amount of games from any one franchise per list (once again, if I have a theme from the original Zelda, I could still use one from A Link to the Past, but I would try not to stretch it much more than that).

Also, the music has to be originally from the game! So while Guitar Hero may have great music, it doesn’t really have any original music.

Keep in mind that since this is the first of these lists, some of the choices will seem a little obvious. But next time around they may not be as predictable.

Anyway, on to the list!

Wow! You REALLY don’t like Shadow very much do you? Haha.

Agree with almost all the themes, but as a MGS fan, I would have chosen the main theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqqq8uqSDnk , so much greatness, on any of it versions is epic. main theme MGS3 version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlnJghwNgtQ .

Just one thing, the Tetris soundtrack isn’t an original soundtrack, actually I think the author is Bach! I remember when my piano teacher taught me a new melody and… it was from Tetris 2! So of course I asked about it, and it isn’t originally from the game. And so with all the other Tetris themes.

Great article, looking forward to the next list!

The way I see it, if Sonic is the face of his franchise, then Shadow is the face of everything that has gone wrong with the franchise. He was a harmless addition in Sonic Adventure 2, but he seems to have stolen the spotlight from most of the classic Sonic characters. Not to mention he always brings in one kind of storyline or another that further changes the series from what it once was.

You’ve got a good point. By the way, don’t you just wish the games went back to the villains being just Eggman (Robotnik) and Metal Sonic instead of some random new major villain seen only once in the entires series??

@ ZainR

I have waited for a classic Sonic vs. Robotnik game for what seems like forever. I’ll have my fingers crossed that Project Needlemouse sets things straight.
