It’s a brand new year and it’s time for some more reviews! For my first review of the year, I choose The Day the Earth stood still. As I’m sure most people already know, The Day the Earth Stood still is a remake of the 1951 film of the same name. The original is considered a classic. The new film, however, probably won’t be remembered as fondly, but it isn’t all bad either.
The story is simple enough: Alien comes to earth, deems humans corrupt, and decides the Earth would be better off without them. It is a good (if not familiar) story. I have to say though, I find that the alien (Klatuu, as he is called) has no right to judge the human race given that his species is capable of such things as healing/repairing just about anyone/anything with just a touch and can even change their physical bodies of another species (like Keanu Reeves). Really, humans don’t have those kind of powers so what gives him the right to judge?! Sorry, getting sidetracked.
I have to say, the title “The Day the Earth Stood Still” is quite fitting for a lot of the film, as it seems awfully slow moving at times and almost seems like the Earth is indeed standing still. But thankfully there areĀ moments in the film that make up for it with good story progression and even a decent bit of action, but mostly not until the second half.
I also have to say, I really liked the alien robot, Gort. He kind of looks like one of the Starmen from Earthbound so I will refer to him as such.
All in all I feel The Day the Earth Stood Still was pretty hit and miss for me, it has its good moments but it is too bogged down by its predictability and its too slow too often pace. But one thing is for sure, the Starman is very, very cool.
You really should let me go…
