Best of 2008 (Yammie Awards)

*Best Video Game Villain*

Winner: The Robot Masters (Megaman 9)

The list of evil robot masters has stretched to great lengths over the years. Dr. Wily’s genius has brought us some of the most memorable boss fights in gaming history that includes the likes of Gutsman, Cutman, Metalman and Skullman. Though in later iterations of the series the quality of villains may have wained with such dorks as Tomahawkman, Aquaman (not the even more lame super hero) and Turboman (not the guy from Jingle all the Way). Megaman 9 finally managed to bring a roster of robot masters to rival the best of them. With villains like Concreteman, Hornetman, Splashwoman and the totally awesome Galaxyman, Megaman 9 further proved what made the series so classic to begin with.

Runner-up: Liquid Ocelot (Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots)

The man known as Ocelot (formerly Revolver Ocelot) proved (for the final time) why he is one of the greatest video game villains of all time. I wish we still got to see him use those classic revolvers that he was famous for, but even without them he proved how great of a villain he is.

Runner-up: The Infected (Left 4 Dead)

Although zombies in video games may not seem like such a novel idea, Left 4 Dead’s “infected” proved to be great for a number of reasons. For one, they’re everywhere, no matter where you go, they’re there. Whether it’s a small group or a massive horde, you will have to deal with these zombies whether you want to or not. For another thing, they are genuinely creepy, the basic infected are frightening in their own right, but when you add the terrifyingly powerful tanks, the horribly disgusting Boomers and the downright eerie witches, the infected really made Left 4 Dead.

Runner-up: Dr. Wily (Megaman 9)

Dr. Wily is one of the greatest and most consistent villains in video game history. Megaman 9 further proved this when he (once again) created eight unique robot masters to help him in his quest for world domination. Only this time, he kicks it up a notch by framing Dr. Light for the whole thing, and (despite that he has already done this eight times prior) people fall for it. The other thing that puts him on the list is the totally awesome batch of robots he built this time around, including one of the most frustrating boss fights I have ever experienced: The duel displacing gel monsters (seriously, that thing was out of hand)!
