Best of 2008 (Yammie Awards)

*Biggest Video Game Loser*

Winner: The King of Town (Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People)

>To tell you the truth, I like the King of Town, I’m sorry but I think he’s funny. But even I’ll admit the reason why I think he’s funny is because he’s such an easy target for all the other characters to make fun of. But he gets “top honors” mostly because of his role in SBCG4AP episode 2, in which he unjustly sentences Strong Bad to house arrest after instituting a ridiculous “email tax.” And just why did he do it? Because he was bored. Wait a minute…That’s actually starting to sound kind of cool. But the fact that Strong Bad was his victim gives him this dubious award.

Runner-up: Jansen/ Half the cast of Lost Odyssey in general (Lost Odyssey)

Okay, Lost Odyssey was a really good RPG, the story was genuinely touching and it had some really cool characters (namely the immortal ones), but as is the case with nearly all RPGs, it had its fair share of losers. Among them are those annoying twins, the cowardice Tolten (though, in his defense, he shapes up later on) and the biggest loser of the bunch, Jansen. What makes this guy so annoying are his horrendously cheesy one-liners that he just has to throw in at the most inappropriate moments. He gets presented as a comic relief character, but in order to fill that role, you have to be funny. But Jansen just comes off as irritating.

Runner-up: Pit (Super Smash Bros. Brawl)

I know I am now the enemy of many a fanboy (like I care), but lets get this straight: The Pit is Super Smash Bros. Brawl is not the same Pit from Kid Icarus! In Kid Icarus, Pit was an awesome little angel dude with an old-school video game character design, but Brawl’s Pit just looks like a generic anime pretty boy. To make things worse he is the cheapest character in the entire game and I swear the people who play him (and Ike for that matter) always gang up on the less generic anime-esque characters when playing online. But the worst part of all is now you hear people ask the same question over and over again: When will Nintendo announce a new Kid Icarus?

Not that I’m against a new Kid Icarus, but I bet more than half of these people never even heard of the original before Pit was announced for Brawl. All they want is to see another game staring a generic anime character…Ugh that’s about as novel as Triple H being WWE champion.

Runner-up: Strong Sad (Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People)

Strong Sad is the “lovable loser” on this list. He is one of the fan favorite characters in the Homestar Runner universe after all, but he’s still Strong Bad’s whiny (sometimes snooty) younger brother. The elephant-footed ghost man continued his depressing ways in the world of video games.

This might be the most random thing in your blog to comment on, but there was something in these awards that bugged me. Specifically, the ‘Biggest Video Game Loser’ category. You played Sonic Unleashed, right? If so (and I know you have, you said so in a reply to a comment in your Sonic 4 review), then hopefully you agree that there is a certain character from that game who should have won instead (and his name is spelled C – H – I – P). Seriously, that little freak is one of my least favorite, most annoying character to have EVER shown his stupid face in a video game! Why does the whole world decide to throw all the hate on Sonic characters like Big or Shadow (who are undeserving of said hate IMO), and ignore the real bad characters like Chip?!?! I just had to get that off my chest. I want the rest of the world to hate Chip as much as I do.

Well, this was written back when my blog was more random, so technically, any randomness you provide to it isn’t actually that random at all (I do hope to start getting some of my former randomness back).

Anyway, you’re right to say Chip was indeed a big loser of a character. But I believe at the time I wrote this, I hadn’t quite played Sonic Unleashed yet (it was a procrastination thing).

Nice to know some of my old stuff is getting some attention, even if I myself cringe a little when reading it.
