After I posted EDGE magazine list of “the 100 best games to play today” list a few days ago, I really started thinking about some of the games that appeared on it (especially the top ten). I think EDGE did a great job for the most part, but at the same time I feel there were some titles that were absent that I really felt should be included somewhere on the list.
Amongst the obvious choices would be Sonic the Hedgehog and Megaman. I don’t want to sound like one of those annoying fans who complains because whatever game didn’t make it on the list, but I have to say I feel both of those franchises deserved some recognition, I mean, next to Mario these guys are the biggest mascots in the video game world. And even more than that, the classic Genesis Sonic titles and the primary Megaman games are still very, very fun to play. Can someone honestly say singstar deserves a spot on the list and not Sonic the Hedgehog 2 or Megaman 2?
I also have to bring up Donkey Kong Country (once again). I seriously don’t see why it gets excluded from these lists, it holds up better today than a lot of other games, and is more fun to play than most every game released these days. Plus I also think people fail to relize its significance. Super Mario World carried the Super Nintendo at first, but after Sonic was released and SEGA began making one sequel after another the Genesis started to get the upper hand. It wasn’t until Donkey Kong Country was released that the Super Nintendo once again became the dominate force in the gaming market. Donkey Kong Country revived an entire console, that’s something not even the Zelda franchise can claim, and it sadly seems like people forget (or ignore) this. Maybe next time DK.
And about the top ten, I have to say they had an excellent selection of games for the top ten overall. It was great to see Yoshi’s Island rank so high, and Tetris and Super Mario World always deserve whatever praise they receive. But the “problem” I have with it is the order. Not that I’m ragging on Ocarina of Time, but I honestly don’t think of it as number one. But to be honest I think it would be better if the top ten weren’t ranked at all, and were all just collectively known as the top ten. Do we really need to have a ranking every single time? Especially when the majority of the gaming community loves to whine and complain about these kinds of things. I think with the games listed in the top ten, that had it not been numbered and all games were recognizes as the greatest, it may have been a perfect list. But since it was numbered, it will have to settle as an exceptionally great list.
I just figured I would give a little more say-so on all that.
