Star Trek Review

Yams’ log, number 99: I have recently been beamed into a movie theater to see the new Star Trek film and thoroughly enjoyed it. This is the review of said movie.

Going into Star Trek I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I like Star Trek, but I’ve never been one to know all the details of the various series. And it seems to fully appreciate all the series that followed the original, you need a deep understanding of the Star Trek universe. Thankfully, this film is a takeoff of the original series. A reboot may be a bit more precise (which is also usually something to be skeptical of).

Also thankfully, the film pulls off the whole reboot thing with flying colors, and it does it in such a way that no uber nerd fan could dare say it “ruined” anything (that seems to be a favorite pastime of theirs).

Star Trek tells the story of a young Captain Kirk and how he earned the title of “captain” aboard the U.S.S Enterprise. The story has enough of that fancy dialogue that Star Trek is so famous for but it doesn’t let up on the action either. I do not want to spoil much but the story does involve time travel and I have to comment that it is one of the select few things (like Back to the Future) where the whole time travel concept actually makes sense (unlike Prisoner of Azkaban…that was a great movie though).

As I said, the action is very exciting to watch, whether it be the dramatic dueling scenes (the scene with Kirk and Sulu fighting to the death against some Romulans is quite cool) or the space battles (no more quick button presses than having the guy say “we launched a photon torpedo” this time, you get to see some cool stuff), the action is very well done.

From a pure entertainment standpoint, I think that Star Trek is the best film I have seen so far in 2009. It has everything you could ask for in a film that bares the Star Trek name and is sure to become a modern day, sci-fi classic. Yeah it’s really good!

Live long and prosper.
