Sorry for the recent absence, my decision to write five posts in one day was kind of a last minute thing and I guess doing all of that in such a short time burned me out. Anyway, here’s something new!
Being the immense fan of video games that I am, I felt the need to get something off of my chest. And that thing is just how annoying the majority of video game fans seem to have become.
Some people may call me arrogant for saying something like that, being a fan of video games myself. But I’m not about to brag myself up, I’m just commenting on how annoying other people are (you gotta love the technicalities). It seems no matter what video game website you visit, or magazine you read, you always hear a bunch of yahoos going on and on about what’s wrong with some game that everyone else likes, or how they could improve the game to fit more into the liking of whatever whiner is writing on said forums/letter. Now some people may call me hypocritical, as I have made my opinion on the undeservedly popular Grand Theft Auto series quite clear, and I will continue to do so. But the difference is everything I say about Grand Theft Auto isn’t just based on my personal opinion of the game, but on the incredibly negative impact it has had on the world of games. But video game fans are just never satisfied, they write on forums and write their thoughts(?) on things like Gamefaqs or IGN about how X-game isn’t good enough because of some tiny minuscule detail. They constantly complain about how whatever new entry in a series isn’t as good as that one that they fanboyishly obsess over. Look I’m all for nostalgia, and indeed I’ve made it clear that I prefer the majority of old games to the majority of new ones, but I don’t let nostalgia blind me with ignorance.
The two words that seem to be most frequently used in the average “hardcore” gamer of today are “I” and “want.” They always go on about “I want this added to the game!” or “I want better graphic!” or how about the most annoying of all “X-company has betrayed us. They are catering to new crowds and they don’t care about what I want!”
It isn’t a video game company’s job to only make a game to appeal to a certain crowd, their job is to make games, and make money doing it. People label themselves as “hardcore” gamers and they act like anyone that can’t spend a minimum of seven-plus hours a day is somehow beneath them, and they label them as “casual.”
These “hardcore” gamers walk around with an undeserved sense of entitlement and act as though the world of video games should revolve around their every little whimsy. But in reality (something they don’t know much of, I’m sure) they are just making themselves out to be nothing but whiners and spoiled little brats.
Their whole “I want” nature goes so far that they are not only never satisfied, but they refuse to be pleased. So much so that there is even a minority of gamers that have some misguided video game-based ideaology that no video game should ever receive a perfect score, because nothing is perfect (these individuals have clearly never seen the Toy Story films). That whole idea is just idiotic, to put it bluntly. There is no logic behind that. So you have a rating system but you refuse to use the whole thing just because? Such utter nonsense, that is. The worst part is how some video game reviewers actually catered to this crowd (are they mad?) for a long while. And indeed video game websites IGN and gamespot didn’t give a single game a perfect score for I think it was almost 9 and 8 years, respectively. Both of those websites finally awarded two perfect scores last year to two undeserving titles, one of them, Metal Gear Solid 4, was good, but not good enough to warrant a perfect score after so long. The other was Grand Theft Auto 4, which by baring that name alone says how undeserving it is but I guess with a deep enough pocket book and a boatload of hype these websites buy into anything.
Oops, I started to lose my train of thought there for a minute. This should be about the “fans”, I’ll save those websites for another rant.
Like I said, some will call me arrogant, but the constant whining and complaining, and all the famboyism has slowly but surely turned me into the gaming world’s equivalent of Chris Jericho.
For those unfamiliar, Chris Jericho is a professional wrestler (stop laughing) who has in recent times developed a kind of “I hate the fans” gimmick. Just Thought I should point that out.
I have just grown tired of these people always wanting to look at the negative side of things and just not wanting to be happy with anything. I’ve grown tired of how they take themselves so seriously (and because they spend more time in front of the TV than others, no less). I have become irritated with all the labels they throw around, like “hardcore” and “casual”, “kiddy” and”mature”, and all that nonsense. Since when did video games become something where people who liked them had to be associated under a certain class. Last I checked video games were toys (yes, I believe in video games as an art form, but I am not about to deny that they are also toys).
I know I am going on a seemingly angry rant here. I know this probably isn’t my most fun post to read. But I just had to get some of this off of my chest. Yes, there are some good video game fans out there, and some that can be considered reasonable people, but the majority of them are either older gamers or those that are wrongfully dubbed “casuals” (as though it’s some kind of crime to play less video games than someone else). But it seems like most of today’s gamers are just so selfish and childish about the whole thing. They want others to treat video games as an art form yet they themselves treat it less like one than anyone else. I can only hope that they shape up, and that they shut up with all their “I wants.”
Oh, and by the way, Sephiroth isn’t that cool!
