X-Men Origins: Wolverine Review

The X-Men movie franchise has been pretty inconsistent if not anything else. X-Men 1 was pretty decent, X-Men 2 was really good and X-Men 3…ehh not so much (I did enjoy Kelsey Grammer as Beast though, who else would be Beast c’mon). X-Men Origins: Wolverine follows in this tradition with a movie that has its good points, but at the same time can feel a bit shallow in its plot and dialogue and has enough over-the-top super hero ridiculousness in its action sequences to make that absurd Green Goblin costume from Spiderman 1 green(er) with envy.

As the name so blatantly suggests, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the origin story of the X-Man known as Wolverine.  We see Wolverine through the ages, fighting in various wars through the decades and being recruited by William Striker, but after seeing the horrible things Striker is capable of, Wolverine leaves to lead a normal (except for the claws and the healing) life. Of course this life doesn’t last and tragedy strikes, and the culprit responsible for ruining Wolverine’s life is none other than his “brother”, Sabertooth (maybe my memory doesn’t serve me correctly, but I don’t remember Sabertooth ever being Wolverine’s brother). Seeking the help he needs to kill Sabertooth, Wolverine is found by William Striker, who convinces Wolverine to become part of an experiment (the weapon X project to those more familiar to the franchise) for the help he needs in his mission.

The story is “Wolverine” enough, but at the same time it just seems to lack depth, and the story gets a bit ridiculous and even borderline laughable once all the details of the plot come together.

The action is so-so, some of it is fun to watch, like the battle at the end of the film. But at other times it just seems so over-the top. The scene involving a helicopter comes to mind when I say this, as I think they could make a new substitute for the term “jumping the shark” (or nuking the fridge if your a fan of that one) with the term “chopping the chopper.”

The special effects are nothing too special, but I’m not one to see a movie for the special effects anyway.

So all around X-Men Origins: Wolverine has good qualities about it, but don’t go into it expecting something like Spiderman 2, not every super hero film can be that good. I would probably say Wolverine isn’t as good as X-Men 2, but I found it to be a much more enjoyable film than X-Men 3. Go into it expecting a good “comic action movie” and you’ll enjoy it.

Chopping the chopper..hmmm…I should trademark that.

Just don’t call the man Blob!
