Ah, animation. Such a wonderful art form. In many ways, it is the purest art form in existence . Animation is an art form that can take us places we normally wouldn’t even begin to imagine.
Animation is an art that at times is indescribable wonderful. It is a form of art that can teach us lessons without feeling like it’s self-righteous (like so many live action films do these days, unfortunately), and rarely does animation have an agenda (Happy Feet aside).
I have finished my reviews for two animated features that are truly special. One is another Pixar classic, Up. The other the latest film by a man who is oft considered the greatest animator in the world, Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo.
Yes, Up was released back in May, and I intended to have my review for it a while ago. But frankly, I seldom see a film that good! And I honestly had trouble getting the review right. I almost had it ready a few other times, but I felt I didn’t do it justice. And after it had been delayed so long, I just decided to review it when I reviewed Ponyo.
Ponyo is a film which I myself have been heavily hyping, being a fan the Hayao Miyazaki that I am. Let me just say that with all my hyping aside, I honestly loved this film. It is a work of art.
Not only are these two films the best animated features of the year, they stand on a pedestal above all other 2009 films. They are the toast among the crumbs, if you will. In fact, I believe them to be two of the most astonishing animated features I have ever seen.
Consider this a celebration of animation, a truly wonderful form of art!
