I decided to write another pro-wrestling post, it’s been a while since I’ve done one of them..
Anyway, I decided to write about the current WWE Unified Tag Team Champions (that’s such a mouthful), Chris Jericho and The Big Show, unofficially known as “Jerishow.”
I think Jerishow is easily one of the WWE’s best tag teams of the past several years to put it bluntly. I know that may not sound like much, given that most tag teams that have come around since the attitude era have ranged from “not that great” to “what a stupid gimmick!” But it was intended as a compliment.
The thing that makes Jerishow a great WWE tag team is, for one thing, they are a team comprised of two main event level wrestlers. For another, they aren’t solely based on a gimmick (like say, Deuce and Domino).
Yes, we probably could have seen a more “electrifying” tag team when Jericho and Edge won the titles, but you can’t very well blame Edge for getting injured… And the fact that they had him replaced with someone like The Big Show was a good twist on it, even if it wasn’t as much of an unexpected choice as someone like say, Jack Swagger would have been.
Plus, the whole “strength and skill” combination of Big Show and Jericho makes for a good reprieve from the “two guys about the same height with identical gimmicks” style of most of WWE’s recent tag teams. Sure, a big guy/smaller guy tag team may not be that original, but it works a lot better with someone as big as The Big Show and someone as good in the ring as Jericho.
And I’m glad that the team has actually had a fair number of successful title defenses in the relatively short time that they’ve had the titles. Although they have sadly had to face a few not-up-to-par tag teams like Cryme Tyme, the title reign added more credibility when the beat Batista and Rey Mysterio.
Unfortunately, the team probably won’t last long. The WWE already seems to be showing signs of the team splitting, and has hinted at a future title match against Triple H and Shawn Michaels, and given that Triple H hasn’t had a title for a few months, the WWE is sure to give them the belts. It unfortunately looks like Jerishow will be one of those tag teams that has a good title run, but then disappears almost immediately afterwards (though luckily in this case we have two main eventers, so they are sure to stick around even after the team disbands).
But for the time being, team Jerishow is definitely one of the WWE’s better tag teams in recent years. They still need a bit more time before I say they’re a betterĀ tag team then John Morrison and The Miz were, since that team had two very successful title reigns and reminded us what a tag team should look like after years of mediocrity. But who knows, maybe the WWE will decide to keep Jerishow around and either keep their title reign going a while longer or give them another title reign in the future….But I doubt it…
But in the meantime, let’s enjoy the heelish antics of team Jerishow.
