Time Out’s Top 50 Animated Films

It has been a while since the last time I posted a list here. Most of them seem to be about video games, but here is one about Animated films. Being someone who dearly loves animation I felt I should post it here (with just a dash of commentary). The list comes from Great Britain’s Time Out Magazine. It was made to celebrate the release of Pixar’s Up in the U.K.

So without further ramblings, here is the list!

50:  Heavy Metal

49:  Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

48:  Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

47:  Sleeping Beauty

46:   Paprika

45:  Transformers: The Movie  (Bah weep granah weep ninni bong!)

44:  Walking Life/A Scanner Darkly

43:  Happy Feet (I still think it’s overrated.)

42:   Fritz the Cat

41:  Ferngully: The Last Rainforest  (Yes, it’s as preachy as the title suggests.)

40: Animal Farm

39:  Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters  (Am I the only one who thinks Aqua Teen Hunger Force isn’t Funny?)

38:  Ratatouille

37:  A Soldier’s Tale

36:  The Lord of the Rings (Ralph Bakshi version)   (I’m sorry but I can’t stand this version.)

35:  Beavis and Butthead do America  (Why did King of the Hill never get a movie?)

34:  Ghost in the Shell

33:  Aladdin

32:  Kirikou and the Sorceress

31: Wall-E

30:  Porco Rosso (Probably Miyazaki’s most underrated film.)

29:   The Secret of NIMH

28:  Persepolis

27: A Bug’s Life (but also Antz)

26:  Princess Mononoke

25:  Watership Down

24:  The Incredibles (An aptly named movie. Incredible indeed.)

23: Perfect Blue

22: Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas

21: Whisper of the Heart

20:  Pinocchio

19:  When the Wind Blows

18:   The Jungle Book

17:  The Brave Little Toaster

16:  Akira (one of the most overrated movies of all time. Yeah I said it!)

15: The Iron Giant (One of the most underrated movies of all time. So there you go!)

14: Grandahar

13:  Dumbo

12:  Grave of the Fireflies

11: Bambi

10: Robin Hood (I always found this to be one of Disney’s most underrated features.)

9:  South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut  (A nice little Disney film. I am obviously joking.)

8:  The Triplets of Bellville (Was this the one where the guy licked that frog?)

7:  Yellow Submarine (We all live in one…)

6:  Miyazaki’s Spirited Away (A Masterpiece amongst masterpieces.)

5:  Toy Story/Toy Story 2  (The fact that they are revolutionary is an afterthought to how great they are.)

4:  Fantasia (I want an army of broom men!)

3:  The Bugs Bunny/ Road Runner Movie (I still find Bugs Bunny to be one of the least likable Looney Toons.)

2:  Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (The first full length, traditionally animated feature is still a classic.)

1: My Neighbor Totoro  (Hayao Miyazaki’s legendary animated feature about the wonders of life and childhood.)

And there you have it, Time Out’s top 50 animated films. Of course there are a few things I would have to point out, like why the heck Ferngully, Final Fantasy: the Spirits Within and Ralph Bakshi’s Lord of the Rings were even considered for the list. Or the fact that the Bugs Bunny/Road Runner movie isn’t technically a feature length film and it resides at number three seems strange. And there are a few other films that I don’t think should be on the list, like the infinitely overrated and plotless Akira.

But, the fact that My Neighbor Totoro claims the number one spot says something very wonderful. And Toy Story making it in the top five is a given, but ever so deserving. And despite the fact that Spirited Away is a very high number six, I would definitely bump it higher! The mentioned movies truly deserve their spots in the top ten.

I would probably bump the other Ghibli and Pixar movies higher, but it was great to see the shamefully underrated Porco Rosso make the list! But just where were Kiki’s Delivery Service, Finding Nemo, Beauty and the Beast and their like? I hope to see them on whatever the next “best animated films” list will be.

I keep saying I need to make my own lists in the future, and I hope to do so eventually. But for now, enjoy a nice long ride in the Catbus!

Bah weep granah weep ninni bong!

Some of these movies I’ve never seen before like My Neighbor Totoro and Miyaki’s Spirited Away. I’d have also thought Ponyo would be on the list too.

Ponyo isn’t being released in England until February, so I don’t believe it was eligible. But it is most deserving on a list of this kind. Such a wonderful movie Ponyo is.

And I highly recommend that you check out the films of Hayao Miyazaki.

The only thing about this list that seems to make sense is the number 1 position for Totoro. Are they serious about including Beavis and Butthead do America and Aqua Team Hunger Force? And why would they reserve a spot for the first Ghost in the Shell movie without even mentioning its vastly superior sequel?

Well I guess everyone is entitled to his own opinion.

Totoro is more than deserving of a top spot. But yes, the list has some questionable choices, like I mentioned, there’s a strange absence of Beauty and the Beast for example.

And I don’t think I would include any films based on television series…Unless maybe they made a King of the Hill movie.
