Top 10 Mario Power-Ups

Mario and Luigi have seen many power-ups through the years. It all began with Super Mario Bros. and the Super Mushroom, which merely made a small, whimpy Mario into his now-standard “super” self. But through the years each sequel has brought their own power-ups to the table. Some have made Mario super-sized, some have made him throw hammers, and some even had Mario dressing like a bee. Some of these power-ups have become just as iconic as the games they appeared in.

Mario’s upcoming Wii U adventure, Super Mario 3D World, is all about the power-ups. 3D World looks to feature more power-ups than any Mario game before it, most prominently featuring the new “Cat Mario” power.

To celebrate 3D World’s love of power-ups, here is my list of the ten greatest Mario power-ups that have appeared in the series so far. Oh, but I won’t be including items such as Super Mario Galaxy 2′s drill (despite how cool it is), only the power-ups that change Mario into some kind of “super” form.

So without further ado, here are my top 10 Mario Power-ups (and let’s see just how many more times I can say “power-ups” before this list is done)! But first, the runner-up.

Good list! You had pretty much all of Mario’s best power-ups, but there are some things I would have done differently. For one thing, I would have put the hammer bros suit higher. I think that suit is so underappreciated, because it can kill pretty much anything the fire suit cannot! I mean, it lets you kill boos and thwomps, among other seemingly invincible foes?! How much better than that can you get?! Also, the Kuribos shoe should have made an appearance somewhere. Yeah, I know it’s just in one level of Super Mario Bros. 3, but it makes for one fun and extremely memorable level.

I was tempted to include the Starman, but I figured Metal Mario and Mega Mario do basically the same thing but with more style. I dunno. :P
